Most people think of sodium as being bad because we are inundated with recommendations by medical authorities, such as the American Heart Association, to keep our sodium intake at no more than 2,300 milligrams a day. This is equal to a teaspoon of table salt. They put this recommendation out because they say sodium raises blood pressure and high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease and stroke.

According to long-running studies done by the Framingham Offspring Study report, consuming fewer than 2,500 milligrams of sodium is actually associated with higher blood pressure. Even better, they recorded the lowest blood pressure coming from subjects that consumed more than 4,000 milligrams of sodium daily. Amounts like this are considered dangerously high by medical authorities. Also, other studies have shown that cholesterol and triglycerides go up when sodium is restricted to low levels.

The truth is that sodium is a very important mineral for heart health, brain health and proper muscle control. It is a necessity for electrolyte balance and hydration in the body. But, it is important to get your sodium through proper sources like unprocessed sea salt. Sodium is very beneficial when combined with other trace minerals, especially potassium. Quality sea salt contains around 64 different trace minerals, many of which are essential to health and the key to receiving positive health benefits from sodium is that it is combined with other trace minerals.
